  • School Wellness | MCSSSDNJ

School Wellness Program MCSSSD recognizes that healthy students are often better learners; therefore, we support school health and wellness policies and practices that address the physical, social, and emotional needs of our students. Our goal is to promote the health and well-being of the whole child. Recognizing that education cannot achieve this alone, the district supports a coordinated school health program (CSH) model consisting of the following eight interactive components: health education; physical education & physical activity; nutrition environment & services; health services; counseling, psychological & social services; physical environment; employee wellness, and family engagement. This approach or process facilitates a blending of resources and personnel in the school and the local community. Our District Wellness Committee meets annually to review school health and safety policies and procedures in order to continually reflect on current and best practices in the field of health and physical education. School Wellness Week is celebrated annually in each of our schools during National Nutrition Month in March. In addition, each school is required to complete an annual self-assessment that is presented to the public at the May Board of Education Meeting. District-Wide Programs The following district-wide programs are utilized to teach students about the importance of making informed food choices, developing sound eating and physical activity habits, and character education in order to enable them to responsibly and responsively make informed decisions that influence lifelong healthy behaviors within the context of self, family, school and the local and global communities: Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Social Studies School Counseling Program School Health Services Program Individual School Programs In addition to district-wide programs, building-based initiatives are also utilized to promote the health and well-being of the whole child where positive character development and making good choices are recognized and reinforced. • Home Component | MCSSSDNJ

Home Component Program Coordinator Krista Gerleit Phone: 609-588-8499 • Email: kgerleit@mcsssd.us The Home Component Program is an optional program for families whose children attend MCSSSD and participating districts. The program is designed to teach parents and primary caregivers the strategies and techniques used in school to decrease challenging behavior and help children develop, generalize, and maintain socially significant replacement skills in the home and community. Families may request referrals for in-home services by contacting their child's case manager. Once referred, the family will receive a registration letter to attend the next (mandatory) 4-hour parent training, held over two evenings. Initial parent training is offered three times each school year. Following the training, the home component coordinator will meet with each family and, together, develop realistic and attainable outcomes based on the child and family’s needs.

  • Related Services | MCSSSDNJ

Related Services A full range of therapeutic services including speech, occupational and physical therapy are provided at Mercer County Special Services School District. Certified school social workers and school psychologists provide individual and group counseling. All related services are provided in accordance with the student's IEP. Therapists work collaboratively with each other and the classroom teacher to fully integrate and support student needs. Two certified school nurses provide nursing and health services in each building. In addition to routine care of children, our nurses may participate in IEP meetings, assist in feeding program reviews, conduct vision and hearing screenings, and maintain close contact with parents and teachers. Counseling Counseling is provided in an individual or small group setting. The school social worker, school psychologist or substance awareness coordinator provides this service to our students. Counseling services are provided to students in need of help for substance abuse, mental health, and behavioral issues which may interfere with the student’s ability to learn. Occupational Therapy The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable students to enhance their ability to participate in school activities or, by modifying the environment, to better support participation. In addition to individual and group sessions, the occupational therapists run a small workshop in which they train students in various job-related skills, such as filing, sorting, collating and assembly tasks. The occupational therapists address daily living skills to better enable students to function in school, at home, and in the community. Physical Therapy The purpose of physical therapy within the school setting is to optimize the student’s ability to function in the least restrictive environment and to identify and maximize quality of life and movement potential for each student with respect to their current school needs and post-graduation/transition goals. Therapists perform classroom and/or vocational ergonomics assessments and handle the evaluation, adjustment, and maintenance of the assistive/adaptive equipment. Therapists work with our students on safety awareness and health/wellness promotion. Speech Therapy Speech therapy is provided to students according to the needs identified in the IEP. Receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language skills are addressed in various settings throughout the school day. Speech and language specialists incorporate the use of augmentative communication systems and assistive technology for those students requiring an alternative mode of communication. Therapy is often integrated during functional, social, vocational, daily living and classroom activities in order to facilitate generalization of skills.
